The 8 Lenses of Examination
This 8-Lens framework is a unique investigative methodology created by the Acts 2020 Project team to analyze the structural and strategic intent of passages in the Book of Acts.
Lens 1: God’s Plan (The Great Commission)
Definition: Tracks the official plan from God, showing the mission moving into new territory and using formal authority.
NBLM Anchor: Centrifugal Expansion.
Investigative Focus: Tracing the "Centrifugal Expansion" from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. We look for examples of the formal Strategic Directive from God (known as “The Great Commission”) and the Delegated Authority (munus) given to the apostles.
Key Evidence: The use of tekmerion (infallible proofs) as the legal standard for the mission’s launch.
The Mission Question: Does this passage show the mission moving into new territory or exercising formal authority?
Lens 2: The Holy Spirit (The Power Source)
Definition: Documents the Spirit's power and direct control over the mission's timing and personnel.
NBLM Anchor: Operational Governance.
Investigative Focus: Identifying examples of God the Holy Spirit overseeing the mission. We document the mechanics of empowerment (dunamis) and the Spirit’s role in controlling the timing and placement of personnel.
Key Evidence: Instances where the Spirit overrules human plans to ensure the mission stays on track.
The Mission Question: How is the Holy Spirit directing the movement or providing the power to overcome obstacles here?
Lens 3: The Gospel (Telling the Story of Jesus)
Definition: Focuses the message on the physical reality of the Resurrected Christ as the ultimate authority.
NBLM Anchor: Sovereign Proclamation.
Investigative Focus: Isolating the "Kerygmatic Core"—the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. We examine the evidence that Jesus is the Kyrios (Sovereign Lord) and how this claim challenged the existing political and religious power structures.
Key Evidence: The "Authorized Testimony" regarding the physical resurrection as a non-negotiable fact.
The Mission Question: Is the message centered on the physical reality of the Resurrected Christ as the ultimate authority?
Lens 4: Prophecy Fulfillment (The Vertical Link)
Definition: Proves the mission was pre-calculated and perfectly fulfills the Bible's long-term divine blueprint.
NBLM Anchor: Vertical Alignment.
Investigative Focus: Verifying the "Apostolic Credentialing". We look for how the New Testament mission perfectly aligns with Old Testament prophecy. This is the "Paper Trail" that proves the mission was pre-calculated and not an afterthought.
Key Evidence: Quotations from the Law and Prophets used to provide legal and historical standing for the mission.
The Mission Question: How does this event prove that the mission is the fulfillment of a long-term, divine blueprint?
Lens 5: Friction Analysis (Acceptance and Opposition)
Definition: Analyzes the acceptance and opposition from governments and institutions, and how barriers are strategically bypassed.
NBLM Anchor: Friction Analysis.
Investigative Focus: Documenting the "Barrier Analysis". We identify the religious, political, and social forces trying to shut down the mission and analyze how the Gospel "disrupts the status quo," utilizing Roman infrastructure to bypass resistance.
Key Evidence: Legal trials, riots, individuals and Roman officials accepting the Gospel, and jurisdictional conflicts that spread the message further.
The Mission Question: What specific force or group is accepting or opposing the Great Commission, and how is opposition being strategically bypassed?
Lens 6: The NT Bridge (The Canonical Handshake)
Definition: Connects a historical event in Acts to the doctrinal instruction manual found in the other New Testament letters.
NBLM Anchor: Canonical Handshake.
Investigative Focus: Linking the historical "Act" in the Book of Acts to the "Instruction Manual" found in the Epistles. This is the Unbroken Thread that connects history to doctrine, proving the New Testament is a cohesive operational manual.
Key Evidence: Direct thematic or historical links between a passage in Acts and the following New Testament chapters in the Bible.
The Mission Question: Which Epistle provides the doctrinal "standard operating procedure" for what we are seeing happen here?
Lens 7: The Final Verdict (The Calculated Reality)
Definition: The final conclusion that the mission is a pre-calculated, authoritative model for the church today.
NBLM Anchor: Calculated Reality.
Investigative Focus: The conclusion of the examination, synthesizing the cumulative proof to show that the early Church was not a lucky accident, but a Calculated Reality. We test for "Evidence of Design" that makes the 1st-century mission the authoritative model for us today.
Key Evidence: The "Evidence of Design" that proves the movement is "without exception correct" and historically verifiable.
The Mission Question: Based on the evidence, does this passage prove the mission is still active and authoritative for the modern Church?
Lens 8: Best Practices (Tactical Mechanics)
Definition: Provides guidance for modern learners on how to apply the first-century mission plan as active team members.
NBLM Anchor: Tactical, Corporate Discipleship.
Investigative Focus: Shifting traditional discipleship from private, individual faith to treating today's believer as an active team member. Discipleship starts with understanding the first-century mission plan and learning to apply it in today’s neo-pagan culture.
Key Evidence: Instances in modern application where groups demand high standards for leaders, use corporate prayer as an offensive tool, and see outside resistance as a planned opportunity to announce Christ’s authority.
The Mission Question: How must modern learners practically apply the first-century mission plan as active team members today?
